What:
World Humanitarian Day is a time to recognize those who face danger and adversity in order to help others. World Humanitarian Day is celebrated on August 19, 2014. In honor of the occasion, Deputy Secretary-General of the United Nations Jan Eliasson and Kenneth Payumo - Chief, Peacekeeping Operations Support section - Department of Safety and Security United Nations will ring the Opening Bell.
2013 and the first half of 2014 saw an alarming rise in the level of attacks and incidents involving humanitarian workers. In Gaza, West Africa, the Central African Republic and South Sudan aid workers continue to be targeted.
