Life on this Rock is an introductory biology digital textbook designed for students majoring in other fields of study. The book utilizes the power of the Trunity eLearning Platform 's rich multi-media capabilities, tools for student and instructor customization, and anywhere/anytime access to bring biology to non-science college students worldwide. In addition, it features self-assessment questions that enhance learning outcomes; the ability to highlight and annotate text; an online glossary integrated into the text; over 250 illustrations; highlights of "real world" applications of key principles; and 700 PowerPoint slides. Over 1,500 students are expected to download Life on this Rock from the Trunity Knowledge Exchange in the 2014-2015 school year.
Students and instructors will benefit from Dr. Shea's 20+ years of experience in the college classroom, where he mastered the art of teaching science to undergraduates not majoring in the subject. Dr. Shea earned a Ph.D. in Biology from Northeastern University after completing his undergraduate and graduate studies in Biology at the University of Massachusetts in Boston. In addition to authoring Life on this Rock , his ongoing research activities have led to the publication of more than 60 scientific reports and 300 peer-reviewed papers. He routinely presents seminars and workshops for the Massachusetts/New Hampshire Alzheimer's Associations, as well as at international scientific meetings, on how nutrition and supplements may maintain and improve brain function despite the normal cognitive decline caused by aging.
As Director of the Center for Cellular Neurobiology and Neurodegeneration Research at UMass/Lowell, Dr. Shea's research efforts focus on the roles played by axonal cytoskeletal proteins in nervous system development, and in the etiology of Alzheimer's and other related neurodegenerative diseases.
