SPEEDWAY – A former champion will lead the field to the green flag of the 21st running of the Brickyard 400.
But a few familiar names won’t be far behind.
On Saturday afternoon, 2003 Brickyard 400 winner Kevin Harvick won the pole position in the final 12-car shootout at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.
But right on this side to start the race in the front row is Jeff Gordon, a four-time winner of the event who qualified second. Gordon is considered one of the favorites for the event because of his strong 2014 season in which he leads the traditional points standings.
Defending champion and South Bend native Ryan Newman will start fourth on the day and is in the second row with Brad Keselowski.
Two-time Brickyard 400 winner and Columbus native Tony Stewart will be in striking distance on Sunday. He’ll begin the race in the third row in sixth place next to fifth-place Brian Vickers.
It’s an all-Indy 500 fourth row as 2014 race participants Kurt Busch and Juan Pablo Montoya qualified seventh and eighth. Joey Logano and Kasey Kahne rounded out the top ten.
