"The Cloud clearly has the potential to revolutionize MSOs' operations, enabling operators to easily deploy new services that can seamlessly and instantly scale to accommodate customer demand -- while minimizing upfront capital costs and ongoing operational expenses," Simone Sassoli, Vice President of Marketing and Business Development at RGB Networks. "Recognizing the Cloud's potential, we launched our CloudXtream initiative last year to develop the best-of-breed solutions, business intelligence and application logic so MSOs can have everything they need to fully leverage the potential of the Cloud."
CloudXtream is the only turnkey approach that enables the deployment of an end-to-end multiscreen ad insertion or network digital video recorder (nDVR) solution in an operator's own data center or hosted private cloud. CloudXtream combines RGB's proven transcoding and packaging software solutions with OpenStack, a robust and open source cloud computing platform. To speed deployments, RGB has developed an OpenStack framework deployment model that enables deployment of up to hundreds of application instances in a matter of minutes. This allows RGB to offer operators a native OpenStack deployment platform that quickly deploys all CloudXtream Ad Insertion for Multiscreen (AIM) and CloudXtream nDVR software components as simply as a 'Video Cloud on a USB stick.'
RGB has developed an entirely different method to deploying video services in a data center, such as a cable headend. Rather than deploying dozens of individual devices -- both chassis and 'pizza boxes' -- now operators can take advantage of a true Software Defined Networking (SDN) approach to deploying services. RGB has developed both OpenStack environment creation tools as well as Orchestration business and application logic. Using RGB's CloudXtream set of tools operators can deploy services in minutes, rather than weeks.
RGB's CloudXtream framework also easily enables the integration and deployment of other third-party applications directly into the OpenStack cloud environment -- DRM, subscriber management, ad servers and other third-party products.
"Unlike vendors that have just 'embraced' the Cloud and OpenStack, we have already spent considerable time to become not just experts, but veterans with our CloudXtream initiative. Our transcoding and packaging software products were architected at inception for virtualized deployments, so utilizing them in a Cloud-based solution was straightforward," said Andy Salo, Vice President of Product Management at RGB. "Complementing our products, we have been developing relationships with other vendors to create a comprehensive ecosystem for deploying open, cloud-based applications. This approach makes CloudXtream a true best-of-breed solution that enables operators to realize the advantages of the Cloud without locking them into costly proprietary solutions that don't meet their requirements or quickly become obsolete."
RGB is already in discussions with several large cable operators and expects to shortly begin customer trials of CloudXtream. The company further anticipates that production deployments of CloudXtream could start as soon as the end of this year.
