IP has defined a new era that will totally re-shape our planet, enhance the consumer experience and transform global industries, including TV and media. Today, internet access is becoming a ubiquitous requirement and IP is becoming an industry imperative. According to research by Business Insider, the number of IP connected devices that can view video has grown from 200 million (personal computers) to over 1.6 billion in the period 2000-2013 alone. The impact of IP technology and the networks will serve ever more connected devices, driven by demand for greater speed and immediacy.
The internet evolution is the catalyst that is converting TV away from the living room and into a truly mobile experience. It is a fundamental driver of delivery networks, spectrum allocation and the business models that shape the TV industry. The growing demand for IP services and TV Anywhere experiences has accelerated the need for long-term IP transformation to support a unified user experience across all traditional in-home and new IP devices.
The role of IP in the year 2020
By 2020, IP will:
•Enable 50 billion connected devices, of which 15 billion are video capable
•Fuel a 10x traffic growth in mobile networks, dominated by video
•Transform consumer expectations and behavior by redefining the video experience, accessibility and adding value to every connected device they own
•Drive collaboration between broadband providers, content owners and market entrants
As we move into an all-IP world, the concept of content consumption will turn on its head, moving from a push to a pull mechanism. This radical repositioning of the consumer experience is also having a significant impact in terms of production. The fully digital capture, edit and workflow have all been empowered by IP networks using file-based processes.
The IP landscape for Technology, Business and the Consumer
Technology
It is essential for all players in the media value chain to find ways to leverage network video acceleration and assurance technologies in IP, as well as video coding standards. This will secure the maximum consumer quality of experience, at the lowest possible cost. The majority of IP-based video will be delivered to the home through fixed networks, while mobile/wireless networks will deliver all outdoor consumption.
We believe by 2020:
•The TV and media industries will realize the importance of bandwidth as a commodity, pointing the spotlight on the consumption habits of video users.
•High-speed internet access will be a well-established consumer expectation (in most countries) and considered an essential utility.
•IP will enable multiple devices to be used simultaneously. On-demand consumption will be more personalized and integrated with the content itself, opening up new possibilities for multi-screen targeted advertising.
Business
The IP Imperative will not only cause huge disruption to the media value chain, it will create an enormous amount of opportunity for an entire industry. Consumer reach will be unprecedented, consumer engagement will be at an all-time high and the user experience will be enhanced beyond all recognition, maximizing the value of all consumer devices.
For innovative service providers, IP can drive opportunistic churn from competitors by unifying the divergence between discovery and consumption across IP devices and apps. The industry of 2020 will achieve revenues of up to $750 billion, an increase from $530 billion in 2013.
We see:
•Today’s OTT disruption model evolving relatively quickly into an established model of collaborative, optimized video delivery through another player’s broadband IP network for carriage.
•Telcos with specific fixed and mobile IP network assets will take advantage of their very strong position to innovate their own TV services. They will also enable quality-assured video delivery for the content and broadcast players, as well as existing pay-TV competitors and new aggregator entrants.
Consumer
The transformation of IP will redefine what the video experience is and change the way in which these experiences can be accessed across all connected devices. Consumers are the drivers in the adoption of technological enhancements. They will increasingly demand even higher quality and more relevant content across all their devices.
By 2020, we predict:
•Consumers will be connected to all screens, devices, platforms and cloud services, which will enable them to pick and mix what, how and when they watch content.
•LTE broadband IP networks will enable a uniformed, consistent experience away from, and in, the home. Consumers will embrace the streaming mentality due to increased confidence in the reliability and capability of mobile networks. They will expect one simple, all-encompassing and convenient platform for TV content across every device.
