U.S. stocks rise modestly before election
NEW YORK (MarketWatch) — U.S. stocks finished with modest gains on Monday, with investors reluctant to make major moves a day ahead of the U.S. presidential election.
“Our hope, probably shared by most investors, is the outcome is decided late tomorrow night and does not drag out over a number of days,” Fred Dickson, chief investment strategist at Davidson Cos., wrote in a note
Others agreed. “Wall Street is hoping for an orderly and decisive outcome, regardless of who wins,” said Andrew Fitzpatrick, director of investments at Hinsdale Associates.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJI JIA) gained 19.28 points, or 0.2%, to end at 13,112.44, led higher by Hewlett-Packard Co. (NYSE:HPQ) and Caterpillar Inc. (NYSE:CAT)
The S&P 500 Index (SNC:SPX) added 3.06 points, or 0.2%, to 1,417.26, with materials and energy the best performing among its 10 major sectors, and with utilities the worst-performing sector.
Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) gained 1.4% after it sold 3 million units of its iPad mini and fourth-generation iPad during the product’s first weekend.
Time Warner Cable Inc. (NYSE:TWC) fell 6.4% as its earnings disappointed.
The Nasdaq Composite Index (NASDAQ:COMP) climbed 17.53 points, or 0.6%, to 2,999.66.
Around 600 million shares traded on the New York Stock Exchange. Composite volume topped 2.9 billion.
