Since early in Cliffs’ history, giving back to communities in which the Company has business operations has been a priority—a practice that continues today. The Company strives to make a difference in its business communities through social investment from facility-based discretionary giving, corporate contributions, and its corporate charitable fund, The Cliffs Foundation. Budgets are managed at the local level with input from our employees, Cliffs’ stakeholders who know the Company’s business communities best.
The Cliffs Foundation
The Cliffs Foundation (formerly The Cleveland-Cliffs Foundation) was formed in 1962 to support the Company’s charitable giving endeavors in its mine communities. Today, the Foundation's areas of focus are Education and Community Building, providing support to non-profit organizations whose services enhance quality of life in Cliffs’ business communities.
Support for Education is achieved through direct contributions to educational institutions with preference being given to programs associated with mining and related technology, although other education programs may be considered as well. (Download "Contributions Guidelines"
Support related to Community Building is achieved through two pillars of support, including Healthy Communities and Vibrant Communities.
Programs associated with Healthy Communities may include support to organizations such as the United Way and other agencies that serve the less fortunate in Cliffs’ communities.
Contributions that help build Vibrant Communities may focus on civic-related projects contributing to local economic development, environmental stewardship and community services.
Culture-related programs, also part of the Vibrant Communities pillar, may include support to museums, theatres and other activities that enhance quality of life.
Priority is given to communities where Cliffs has business operations, specifically where it has mine operations, including:
Marquette Iron Range in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan
Mesabi Iron Range in Northeastern Minnesota
Boone, Logan and Wyoming Counties in the Appalachian region of West Virginia
Jefferson County, Alabama
Cleveland, Ohio where Cliffs’ corporate office is located.
