Today I had a very pleasant conversation with someone that I have admired from afar since we started this website. I knew a bit about her before our conversation; more than enough to know that she is one of the greatest assets the marijuana movement has. But during our conversation, my admiration and respect for her reached epic levels. She is not just A marijuana hero of mine, she is THE hero now. By the end of the conversation I was asking her to be my official marijuana movement mentor lol (and she was thankful, what a great lady!) This lady is none other than Cheryl Shuman.
If you are hip to the Hollywood scene, you may recognize Cheryl Shuman from just about everything. When Cheryl Shuman was naming off the famous people she has worked with, there were so many names my head started spinning. Rather than name them all here, let’s just say that if you can think of someone famous in Hollywood over the last multiple decades, chances are Cheryl Shuman has worked with them. Cheryl Shuman said she got started in Hollywood working on Michael Jackson’sThriller video doing the funky contact lenses, which as I told her, is a way cooler bio than my story of growing up in the Willamette Valley of Oregon!
However, it’s not Cheryl Shuman’s Hollywood contacts that are what make her my marijuana hero. It’s Cheryl Shuman’s raw passion for the marijuana movement that I love. Hearing Cheryl Shuman’s story about how she got cancer and how medical marijuana saved her life almost brought me to tears. But to hear Cheryl Shuman’s story about how it empowered her to fight for marijuana reform, and to embrace her role as a leader in the marijuana movement, and to put her talents to work for the greater cause, that was one of the most powerful and inspiring things I have ever heard.
For the few that might not know about Cheryl Shuman, here is Cheryl Shuman’s info from herFaceboook page (make sure to give her a ‘like’!):
“Cheryl Shuman was the founder of Beverly Hills NORML, charter member of the NORML Women’s Alliance and served on the steering committee for Public Relations and Marketing on an International platform. Shuman is the Director of Public Relations, Media and Marketing for the KUSH Brand which includes KUSH Magazine, KUSH Conventions and DailyBuds.com. Cheryl Shuman has been interviewed for hundreds of television programs, newspapers and magazines, including but not limited to: Access Hollywood, Entertainment Tonight, Today Show NBC, HBO Entertainment News, Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous and more.
Through her personal relationships and connections with Hollywood elite, Cheryl Shuman has been named as one of the most influential women in the cannabis reform movement by international media. Her position with the KUSH brand creates the first and only company of their kind and at the forefront of entertainment marketing, celebrity endorsements, product placement integration, sponsorships, production and technology.”
I actually saw Cheryl Shuman at the High Times Medical Cannabis Cup in Los Angeles, but she was interviewing Kyle Kushman, and to be honest I was a little intimidated. Meeting two legends is a bit too much for me to handle at one time, especially after the amount of brownies I had consumed. I saw Cheryl Shuman one more time, but she was interviewing BReal…busy lady I suppose! I put Cheryl Shuman on my list to contact at a future time and crossed my fingers that it might occur someday.
Then, out of the blue she sent something to our TWB LinkedIn account about her new endeavor, Green Asset International Inc. I will save the details about that endeavor for an article that I am working on right now. I was so happy when we got her message because it gave me a chance to contact her and let her know how happy I am to have her as part of the marijuana movement, and if there was anything I could do to help highlight her pursuits.
Getting the word out that the average marijuana consumer doesn’t fit the stereotypes of the reefer madness propaganda is one of, if not the, most important thing in the marijuana movement. There are few, if any, that do it as well as Cheryl Shuman. Her activism work with NORML, and her contributions to the marijuana movement through Kush Magazine are just a few of the reasons that Cheryl Shuman is my marijuana hero.
Cheryl is known as the ‘Martha Stewart of marijuana’ to which I told her she might also be the ‘Erin Brockavich’ of marijuana due to her tenacity (she liked that!). If you see Cheryl Shuman, please give her a big hug for me…I hear she likes them Nicest person ever!
