Food Safety Testing Market by Contaminants, Technology, Food Types, Geography: Trends & Global Forecast (2010 – 2015)

The global food services industry has been steadily moving towards automation in recent years owing to retail food chains constantly expanding their geographical presence. However, with consumers becoming increasingly aware of food contamination and its consequences on consumption, food safety has become a critical issue in the market. The global food safety market has been steadily growing with the advent of rapid microbial detection methods. The industry is highly regulated with strict guidelines for food handling, testing, and technology.

The overall food safety testing market has been segmented on the basis of contaminants for which food is tested. The contaminants included in this study are pathogens (Salmonella, E-coli, and others), pesticides, GMOs (genetically modified organisms), toxins, and others. The other category includes the residues, allergens, etc. Pathogens account for the largest share in the global food safety testing market, owing to their large prevalence in food types such as meat and vegetables. The food safety testing market mainly includes the big testing laboratories such as Eurofins (Europe), DuPont Qualicon, and small food safety testing suppliers.

The food safety testing technologies basically include traditional methods and rapid screening methods. The traditional method includes the selective agar method and culture enrichment process. The rapid methods include the immuno-assay, ELISA, PCR IMS based methods. The traditional methods were used in the industry for a longer period of time but these are being replaced by rapid testing technologies which give accurate results in less time and prevent false positive results of pathogen detection.

The market is dominated by pathogen testing due to their high prevalence in the contamination of food. In terms of food types, meat products have high priority due to their low shelf-life and high susceptibility for microbial contamination. Market players are focusing on rapid testing methods that provide quick results and better accuracy and are expected to replace traditional testing methods in the near future.

Meat and poultry accounted for the major share in food testing by type; estimated to be around $654 million in 2010; and is expected to increase to $1107 million in 2015 at a CAGR of 11.09% for the same period. The processed food is the next large and fast-growing segment in food testing estimated to grow at CAGR of 11.58% from 2010 to 2015.

Europe accounts for the largest share in the global food safety testing market; primarily due to the stringent nature of food safety regulations pertaining to certain pathogens, especially in member states of the European Union such as Germany, UK, and Italy. Europe accounted for $960 million in 2010 and is expected to reach $1499 million in 2015 at a CAGR of 9.31%.

In North America, pathogen testing by contaminants accounts for the major share in the overall contaminants market. In terms of revenue, the pathogen testing market dominates with approximately 55% market share of overall contaminants market as of 2010. The pesticides testing held the second position in North American food testing market with a market share of 12.89% in terms of revenue in 2010.

Asia is expected to be the fastest growing market for food safety testing, owing to the growing domestic demands as well as the increasing food exports. This market is expected to grow at a CAGR of 14.37% for the period from 2010 to 2015.

The food safety testing market will witness a significant growth in future. The technological advances in food testing and more novel chromogens to improve detection of current and additional target organisms in culture media and improved selectivity of existing culture media will drive the market for food safety testing on the global level. In molecule-based rapid detection methods, increased availability of real time assays, multiplex PCR assays to allow detection of multiple targets, and simpler methods of detection will enable faster results of food testing for various contaminants.
