4K UHD Content Grading System
4K Ultra HD refers to the Television industry resolution standard, defining the image size of 3840x2160 pixels. Beyond the resolution, there are many other factors that determine the quality of the image being displayed in 4K Ultra HD. Content is created from a variety of sources, both analog and digital, that are ultimately delivered to your television.
This week we will discuss 4K Studios' proprietary 4K Ultra HD Grading System. This system was devised to indicate to the viewer the source of the material being displayed. There are currently 3 grades of 4K digital media being delivered on UltraFlix, Platinum, Gold and Silver.
4K Platinum. This is material that was shot using a 4K Digital Camera, edited in 4K and rendered in 4K. The image was never analog and was always in 4K digital format.
4K Gold. This is material that was shot on 35mm film using analog cameras. The film was edited and output to 35mm negatives and prints. 4K Studios takes the 35mm film masters and scans them into native 4K Ultra HD resolution digital files. We then have a variety of internal processes to clean up and present the film in the highest quality possible in the market today.
4K Silver. 4K Studios has also developed a proprietary method for taking films that were shot digitally, in HD, 2K, or 2.7K, that were originally authored to DVD or Blu-ray, working with the original master and re-mastering them in 4K producing a far better result than "up scaling" an HD file. The result is a far superior experience in 4K than the consumer would ever get by simply up scaling the Blu-ray or DVD using hardware scaling built into TV's or other devices.
