There are many ways they can stop or manipulate trading: Read below
I do not have time to fully explain them, because I think it is better that you read them as well, because the explanations are lengthy, and there are different forms.
But basic info is, they can set a price when they know no one will sell, they can put up walls and manipulate orders by using large blocks of shares on low volume trading stocks!

MM Manipulation:
MM needs shares:
Wash Trades:
Short Attacks:
Naked shorting:
Air shares:
You should definitely read about pink sheets as well, as sadly they are attacked more. That is why I have been one of the biggest proponents of uplisting!!
