I think the reason investors didn't realize that Mr. Bordynuik hadn't proven his version of pyrolysis was worth anything is because he framed the 'problem' as trying to scale up the process. He made such a big deal about being able to scale up that investors didn't notice that he didn't prove that the resulting pyrolysis oil was worth any more than the plastic used.
That's like a farmer saying he has a goose which lays golden eggs and wants to get more golden geese, but the problems are building a bigger pen to hold them and the 35% tax rate he'll have to pay on the massive profits. Everyone just takes it as a given that the goose really does lay golden eggs otherwise why would the farmer focus on the hurdles of building a bigger pen and the high tax rate??
