U.S. Orthopedic Trauma Devices Market Outlook to 2020: Led by DePuy Synthes, Stryker, Smith & Nephew, Zimmer and Biomet

VANCOUVER, BC, June 11, 2014 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- via PRWEB - According to a new report series by iData Research ( http://www.idataresearch.com ), the leading global authority in medical device market research, the U.S. Market for Orthopedic Trauma is expected to approach $8 billion by 2020, with DePuy Synthes and Stryker leading the way. Growth will be fueled by sales of plates and screws and will be strongly influenced by increasing unit sales, most notably in the hybrid, and locking plate and screw markets. The intramedullary nail market is also expected to grow quickly, in large part due to the gaining popularity among surgeons for use in many different anatomies.

"The majority of orthopedic trauma products sold in the U.S. are made with titanium over stainless steel. The increased costs associated with using titanium products will be a strong factor in the size of the market and its growth," says Dr. Zamanian, CEO of iData. Titanium is growing in popularity as surgeons become more aware of its benefits in small and mini fragment plates. In addition, titanium provides better biocompatibility than steel and is lighter in weight.

Other key findings from the iData Research report entitled U.S. Orthopedic Trauma Devices Market :

Procedures: Procedure analysis within this study is focused on the following anatomies, which account for the majority of trauma-related bone fixation procedures in the U.S.: shoulder, upper arm, forearm, wrist/hand/fingers, hip, femur, knee, tibia/fibula, ankle, foot and toes. In 2013, there were over 1.6 million total trauma fixation procedures performed in the U.S.

Aging Population: The U.S. Census Bureau projects that the elderly population in the U.S. (aged 65 and older) will double by 2050 to reach 80 million. The number of annual hip fractures is estimated to be 350,000 to 400,000 in the United States, which is equivalent to an incidence rate of one every 1,000 people. Approximately three-quarters of people affected are women, and upwards of 90% of injuries are caused by falls.

Conventional Hip Screws: Strong growth is expected to continue for the intramedullary (IM) nail market as the obese and diabetic patient population expands dramatically. It has been well documented that high-energy traumatic injuries in obese patients often include orthopedic injuries to the pelvis or lower extremities, which often require devices such as IM nails for revision surgeries.

DePuy Synthes' lead in the orthopedic trauma device market is mainly due to the strength of its internal fixation products, and in particular its plates and screws. Stryker is maintaining a strong presence in the plate and screw market with sales of its VariAx™ distal radius locking plate system. Other competitors in these markets are Acumed, Integra LifeSciences, ConMed Linvatec, Arthrex, Bioventus, Orthofix, Biomedical Enterprises and DJO Global.
