American Pie Producer Files for Bankruptcy
Film producer Warren Zide taught a generation of teenagers about band camp and baked goods in his “American Pie” movies. Now he is learning a lesson of about personal finances in bankruptcy court.
Zide, who was also behind the Final Destination movies, has certified to the U.S. Bankruptcy Court in Los Angles that he has completed credit counseling and received notice that he needs to take a course in financial management, court papers show.
The producer filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy protection earlier this month. Chapter 7 means Zide plans to liquidate his assets in order to repay creditors.
Financial troubles, however, don’t end there for Zide. The Michigan native owes the state of California $518,630 in back taxes, the Detroit News reported.
His bankruptcy petition didn’t list specific debts, but Zide pegged his total liabilities at between $1 million and $10 million.
“American Pie,” the 1999 hit about prom night misadventures, has spawned for Zide an entire teen-themed movie franchise, most recently the direct to DVD “American Pie Presents: The Book of Love.”
