Samsung to launch mobile video streaming service in Asia
Aside from an array of phones, Samsung also offers a growing number of services to its users. One of the areas the Korean giant is exploring as we speak is video streaming, with reports suggesting such service will launch in parts of Asia later this year.
Dubbed Project Glued, the service will debut next quarter in Singapore and the Philippines, targeting owners of select Galaxy smartphones and tablets with more devices getting support at a later day. A web-based version will be launched as well and so will a dedicated client for Samsung TVs.
The Glued will offer access to TV shows for $6.50 per month for one season. Aside from streaming, users will also be able to download episodes to watch later. The first episode of every show will be available for free with Samsung hoping that users will be hooked and eventually pay for full access. The service will also allow users to share seasons with up to six friends who will be able to access them [seasons] for 24 hours.
The absence of services like Netflix and Hulu makes it harder for some folks in Asia to legally watch US and UK-based shows. With Samsung’s large footprint and presumingly a big marketing push, major studios may get a new source of revenue, all while providing great content to Samsung device owners. We’ll see how that goes.
