My initial reaction was to check the price of the plastics needed, LDPE, PP and HDPE and I quickly concluded that even if 100% conversion of this scrap plastic to diesel was possible, the so-called technology would struggle with break even and certainly not yield 90% gross margins.
PP: Do you remember Dr. Goldsmith, who IMO posted honestly (and naively) on the HUB for a while, thinking that the true believers would pay attention? Ph.D in chemistry with emphasis on petroleum and plastics, with experience with actual pyrolysis. (so he said. His rational, arithmetically sound, and scientific posts lead me to believe he was simply who he said he was). HE KEPT CRUNCHING THE NUMBERS OVER AND OVER trying to see what the economics of pyrolysis are, and he clearly, irrefutably showed that the economics simply aren't there. NEEDLESS TO SAY: The bashing started, with posts such as "Ph.D huh? What: JB's competitors are giving out Ph.D's?"
The doctor finally stopped posting, thoroughly exasperated. As a scientist, he was used to people analyzing things rationally, without preconceptions. And, HE WAS REALLY EXASPERATED.
There are so many preconceptions held by the "true believers" in JBI that they simply are not willing (and perhaps CANNOT) analyze the situation rationally, and without those preconceptions.
IMHO:
In JB-land,
Dark is light
Bad financials are great financials
Diluting shares by 100 million units is proof of upcoming sales
Blatant, critical falsehoods from the past are irrelevant
Massive employees lay-offs are proof of excellent cost controls
and on and on. We could add 2 or 3 dozen more to the above, but somehow it just doesn't matter to the believers, and why it doesn't matter is what I find so psychologically intriguing. I've been watching this catastrophe (for true naive longs) for a few years now, and it's thoroughly fascinating (and at times exasperating, although less so as I come to understand the psychology of confidence scams).
You have a good one.
