http://www.capgemini.com/blog/capping-it-off/...s-big-data

I’m getting old. I remember Orange launching their first mobile services in the UK – 1994, I think. You can watch it again here. Their model was quite disruptive and created compelling new offers – anyone remember Everyday 50? Bundling with strong price- points based on compelling use cases, innovative new services and exceedingly good customer service saw high adoption. The other network operators were caught in an “old model” and took time to catch up. I stayed with them for 12 years until I moved somewhere with no Orange signal…

Why I am rambling on about a mobile offering in the UK from 20 years ago?

I’ve had the exhausting pleasure of being at EMC World 2014 and I see a parallel.

Front and centre, I see the storage powerhouse is quickly changing focus towards the next generation of enterprise software.

From my perspective at EMC World 2013 there was ONE company talking about Business Data Lakes. Capgemini - and we were tucked away on the 5th floor – it reminded me of The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy:

“But the plans were on display…”
“On display? I eventually had to go down to the cellar to find them.”
“That’s the display department.”
“With a flashlight.”
“Ah, well, the lights had probably gone.”
“So had the stairs.”
“But look, you found the notice, didn’t you?” “Yes,” said Arthur, “yes I did. It was on display in the bottom of a locked filing cabinet stuck in a disused lavatory with a sign on the door saying ‘Beware of the Leopard.”
--- Douglas Adams

EMC World 2014 was very different. Business Data Lake was the central message from Pivotal, and a key facet of the wider EMC Federation story (with the supporting technologies around virtualized storage, etc). What a difference 12 months make.

And why the connection to Orange? I see parallels with Pivotal – a new disruptor that people are exploring, learning about and with new pricing models that will, in my opinion, fundamentally shift the industry.

I was also filmed for Capgemini for the first time; exploring our partnership, a new experience. Oh, and Capgemini were awarded EMC Federation Partner of the Year and the IIG EMEA Partner of the Year Award. It was a great week.
