I am in production. I produce wells after they have been drilled and completed. My knowledge on things concerning drilling are slim, but I will give it a try as it has been explained to me. They do not use u-joint. The lateral would not be a perfect L with a right angle at the bend. They us a mud motor and a angle piece that is attached to the drill bit. The top drive drills when they are going straight. When they start turning the direction they turn the top drive off and engage the mud motor that is connected angled piece, with a predetermined angle. The weight of the pipe forces the bit to make contact and the mud motor turns the drill bit. After they have made the turn and are going straight again they turn the mud motor off and use the top drive again. The pipe will flex and bow. The lateral will be a long curve from the horizontal and then they will drill laterally to the zone of choice. Maybe Oilfield Trash can help me out a little here. I know production and production equipment.
