Vendors have previously made an effort to sway Florida lawmakers into requiring that first-time offenders be subject to the interlock device program, which is currently a $10 million a year industry in the state. However, the executive director of the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles notes that the interlock device system does not address situations in which an individual uses drugs and gets behind the wheel.
State officials are now considering an abstinence program as a means to curb drunk driving incidents. The program would target someone convicted of DWI offenses multiple times. The individual would be kept under surveillance by an ankle monitor, drug patch , random urine tests or even breath tests twice a day. In Florida, the state House Economic Affairs Committee unanimously approved the plans for this 24/7 Sobriety program, which could be used in place of or in addition to the interlock car devices.
