Benz is humourously echoing Mark Twain who at breakfast read his obituary in the morning newspaper!
Clemens is famously quoted as writing, "The reports of my death are greatly exaggerated."
Actually, he wrote to the reporter, "The report of my death was an exaggeration," but the misquote was more Twainlike, so it stuck.
Steve Jobs had the gloomy experience of reading his own obituary and repeated Twain's misquoted remark.
There are cases where famous people have hoaxed their own death in order to read their obituary to see how their life would be reported.
