California lawmakers face hundreds of bills, special session
Lawmakers are reviewing a bill that would allow California officials to license and collect fees from medical marijuana shops.
Supporters say the bill would help protect the medical marijuana industry from coming under attack from the federal government.
The bill was being heard Monday in committee.
The measure also calls for the California Department of Public Health to regulate pot shops in an effort to have uniform standards.
Bob Bowerman, executive director and president of the Sacramento chapter of the National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws, said he doesn't like the language in the bill.
He said the called-for tighter regulations on doctors who issue medical marijuana recommendations, including new training and record keeping, might make it harder for them to do their jobs.
The legislation also calls for more detailed security measures to prevent recreational use at all medical cannabis facilities.
