"pretty easy feat compared to believing that NYDEC

Keep in mind that the NYDEC is concerned with the environment. The NYDEC issued the air permit to allow JBI to burn the pyrolysis off gases and emit the associated exhaust to the air. Even coal burning plants are allowed to emit their exhaust to the air. While the NYDEC deemed the JBI's exhaust to be within acceptable pollution limits, it shouldn't be construed as validation that Mr. Bordynuik's pyrolysis was any more commercially viable than anyone else's pyrolysis nor as proof that JBI can produce crude oil or diesel for under $10/bbl.
The NYDEC air permit is no more proof of JBI's commercial viability than getting a building permit to build a store which sells nothing but clown hats proves that the store is commercially viable.
Watch out for longs who try to play off the NYDEC's permit as being validation of Mr. Bordynuik's pyrolysis. They're intentionally being dishonest or they just don't know any better.
