As analysts predict a growing market for Agile Optical Networking technologies, Alcatel-Lucent is building momentum with contract wins and shipments.
We are breaking records with never before seen capacity and speeds. And we’re finding new ways to help customers make the most of their investment.
Record-breaking trials
In the UK, during a field trial with BT, we achieved real-world speeds of 1.4 Terabits per second (Tb/s) with a world record spectral efficiency of 5.7 bits per second per Hertz (b/s/Hz) over a 410km stretch of live fiber. This is equivalent to transmitting 44 HD films in a single second.
The trial used a new, flexible grid infrastructure to achieve a 42.5% improvement in spectral efficiency. It also used our 400G Photonic Service Engine (PSE) technology on the 1830 Photonic Service Switch , which utilizes wavelength capacity in the most efficient way.
We’ve also been breaking records with Türk Telekom . Turkey’s leading telecom operator recently announced that it had broken a Guinness World Records™ title with an 8 Tb/s data transmission rate – equivalent to downloading 200 DVDs per second – over a single fiber cable in a commercial network. This was performed using our 100G optical technology between Ankara and Istanbul on the Türk Telekom dense wave division multiplexing (DWDM) backbone network.
Ever-growing global momentum
We are growing momentum with customers. Our 1830 PSS has been selected by SFR , the 2 nd largest operator in France, to meet increasing traffic demands across its network from fixed and mobile subscribers. The 1830 PSS has also been selected by leading US telecommunications company Verizon, as well as Russian operator Rostelecom .
During the final quarter of 2013, we also completed several successful trials of our optical solutions, including the first field trial of 400G data transmission over a live network in Australia with Nextgen . And, with Zain in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia , we delivered 100G capability in the country’s main metro locations and conducted a trial of 400G.
We have now deployed the 1830 PSS in more than 410 customer networks, including more than 180 100G customers in over 70 countries across every region of the globe.
From 2012 to 2013, we doubled the number of both 100G customers and port shipments. And we recently marked the shipment of our 10,000 th 100G port to one of the world’s leading operators.
Growing demand for capacity and speed
As Alcatel-Lucent builds market momentum, demand for high-speed DWDM systems is also growing.
Market Research firm, Dell’Oro, has predicted sales of optical transport equipment to expand to $15 billion by 2018 , with 100G accounting for 80% of demand. And Communications Industry Researchers (CIR) recently issued a report predicting that the market for 400G will hit $528 million by 2019. That will drive demand for supporting optical components and silicon devices to nearly $195 million in the same year.
“It’s clear that with the rise in adoption of smartphones and the growing demand for high-bandwidth services in the cloud accessible across both fixed and mobile networks – operators are striving to increase capacity and speed, but they also want to protect their existing investments,” said Basil Alwan, President of Alcatel-Lucent’s IP Routing and Transport division. “And as leaders in IP Transport, that is what we are doing with our Agile Optical Networking solutions – allowing customers to expand and grow easily to meet the continued burgeoning demand.”
