Viacom, Turner, Discovery, Fox test live TV through LTE in the Netherlands
U.S. programmers and wireless carriers will likely be paying close attention to a pilot test that KPN plans to kick off on March 20 in the Netherlands, where it will use its LTE network to deliver a package of 16 live TV network to subscribers using tablets and smartphones.
Viacom ( NYSE: VIA ), Discovery Communications ( Nasdaq: DISCA ), Turner Broadcasting, and Fox Networks are among the U.S.-based programmers that are supplying content for the KPN pilot. The company said its channel lineup will include Viacom's MTV, Comedy Central and Nickelodeon, Discovery Channel, Turner's CNN, and National Geographic Channel, which is owned by Fox.
KPN said its TV through LTE pilot will run for three months. Discovery, Viacom, Fox and Turner also supplied content for a three-month virtual cable pilot that Cox Communications conducted last summer in Orange County, Calif.

KPN didn't detail the technology vendors that it is working with on its TV Everywhere pilot. But it's worth noting that last month, Accenture and KPN teamed up to demonstrate an interactive TV solution at the Mobile World Congress convention that involved Google Glass wearable computers that were used as a second-screen device.
Last week, Verizon ( NYSE: VZ ) CEO Lowell McAdam said he has had talks with the leaders of major content providers about launching a wireless, or over-the-top version of the company's FiOS TV multichannel video service.
Technology vendors have also been pitching U.S. wireless carriers devices that could be used to deliver pay TV programming wirelessly to IP-connected TVs, including MobiTV and AioTV.
