U.S. Teens More Likely than Adults to Believe in God, Heaven and Angels
PR Newswire - Thu Mar 13, 4:00AM CDT
A recent Harris Poll of U.S. adults (ages 18 and older) found belief in God (74%), while strong, to be in decline when compared to previous years; the same held true for many other building blocks of the Judeo-Christian belief system, while belief in Darwin's theory of evolution (47%) was on the rise. But what about the next generation of Americans? As it turns out, belief in God (80% teens vs. 74% adults), heaven (78% teens vs. 68% adults) and angels (74% teens vs. 68% adults), among other foundational religious beliefs, are higher among U.S. teens (ages 13-18) than among their adult counterparts.
Online Streaming Entertainment Providers Are Rapidly Building Brand Equity, According to the 2014 Harris Poll EquiTrend® Study
PR Newswire - Wed Mar 12, 4:00AM CDT
Brands associated with delivering the entertainment content we want, when we want, are rapidly increasing their brand equity, according to findings from the 2014 Harris Poll EquiTrend® (EQ). An examination of the 100 highest rated brands for 2014 shows brands that enable consumers to personalize their entertainment content and scheduling are growing their equity at a faster rate than brands in other categories. Netflix increased at the fastest rate among the Top 100 measured brands over the last two years (2012 to 2014) and Pandora Internet Radio also showed impressive equity growth over the past two years, with the 4th-highest rate of equity growth among the Top 100 brands within that period. More than 1,500 brands were assessed across 170 categories this year - from automotive to department stores - on the Harris Poll EquiTrend Brand Equity Index, which is comprised of three key factors: Familiarity, Quality and Purchase Consideration.
Nine in Ten U.S. Adults Feel Rivalries are Keeping Politicians from Addressing the Interests of Americans Like Them
PR Newswire - Tue Mar 11, 4:00AM CDT
Hot tempers and heated words have always been part of the U.S. political scene. In fact, Aaron Burr challenged Alexander Hamilton to a duel in the early days of the United States. But how bad do Americans think it's gotten? A new Harris Poll addresses the issue of incivility in politics and public life, and whether it's seen as getting in the way of the actual work our political leaders are meant to be doing on our collective behalf. While politicians may not be dueling, findings indicate that roughly nine in ten U.S. adults (89%) believe that political discussions today are angry and bad tempered, and roughly seven in ten (69%) believe that today's political climate is more angry and bad tempered than it was in the past.

"Guilt Free?" "Lite?" "Healthy?" The Harris Poll Examines Consumer Confusion Over Grocery Labels
PR Newswire - Thu Mar 06, 4:00AM CST
Ever stood in the aisle of a grocery store completely overwhelmed by the claims jumping out from the labels? You may not be alone. Health advocacy groups have long decried America's nutrition labeling system as misleading, confusing and, ultimately, inaccurate, and the FDA recently announced plans to overhaul it for the first time in two decades. But just how much do Americans value nutrition against other factors, such as cost and convenience, when making decisions on their grocery runs? And how much faith are they placing in those more general claims, such as Healthy, Guilt Free or Reduced... well... anything? Our findings indicate that while Americans are straight on some of the claims, they're still in need of the skinny on others.
How to Keep Lengthening Life Expectancies from Broadening our Budget Deficit?
PR Newswire - Wed Mar 05, 4:00AM CST
Social security and Medicare are often treated collectively as something of a third rail in politics (though there is admittedly no shortage of those). However, as American life expectancy has increased and as Baby Boomers are now eligible for early retirement and are approaching full retirement benefits eligibility, there is a sense of agreement that something needs to be done in order to keep increasing costs of these programs from forcing the federal budget deficit ever higher. As such, many have recognized that the government will have to modify the Medicare and Social Security programs in some manner to make them sustainable, even if there has been a lack of consensus among our political leaders as to how this might be accomplished. Looking at public sentiment though, Americans appear to favor - given the options on the table - raising the eligibility age for Social Security and Medicare and encouraging more people to work over the age of 65 as the most palatable options.

What to Cut when Majorities of Americans Support Most Major Government Services?
PR Newswire - Tue Mar 04, 4:00AM CST
A new Harris Poll finds that large majorities of the public continue to be supportive of many key government services. This continuing sentiment underscores the difficulty our leaders face when attempting to curb government spending, given that nearly any cut under consideration, such as recent defense cuts proposed by U.S. Senator Chuck Schumer (D. NY) will be met with strong resistance from one segment or another. This leaves us, as a nation, with a dilemma: if almost everything is a third rail, where can we look to find fiscal footing?

Avoid Black Cats? Walk Around Ladders? Are Americans Superstitious?
PR Newswire - Thu Feb 27, 4:00AM CST
Do you walk around a black cat or always throw spilled salt over your shoulder? Just how common are beliefs in certain superstitions many Americans grew up hearing from parents and grandparents? Surprisingly, not as common as one might think. There is the childhood phrase "see a penny, pick it up, all day long you'll have good luck" but just one-third of Americans (33%) believe finding and picking up a penny is good luck. Much has been made in Hollywood about having the groom and bride avoid each other before the wedding because it's bad luck, but only one-quarter of Americans (24%) believe in this old wives' tale.
