Plant Life Extension (PLEX) and Plant Life Management (PLIM) for Nuclear Reactors Research Report
M2 - Fri Nov 22, 3:01AM CST
Research and Markets (http://www.researchandmarkets.com/research/32gdr7/plant_life) has announced the addition of the "Plant Life Extension (PLEX) and Plant Life Management (PLIM) for Nuclear Reactors - Global Market Size, Competitive Landscape and Key Country Analysis to 2025" report to their offering. North America: The Largest Market for Planned Plant Life Extension Programs North America is the largest market for nuclear Plant Life Extension (PLEX) between 2013 and 2025, valued at $20.8 billion, with the US having a market value of $15.8 billion and Canada having a market value of $5.1 billion. The US Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) has approved license renewals for 73 reactors and a further 18 are currently under review, with seven more license applications anticipated in the coming years. In Europe, the major PLEX markets between 2013 and 2025 are France, Ukraine, the UK and Russia, with market values of $5.2 billion, $3.4 billion, $2.6 billion and $2 billion. Previously, numerous extensions were planned in Europe, but after the Fukushima disaster some countries chose to discontinue their PLEX plans and instead proceed towards developing a nuclear-free energy mix. In the Asia-Pacific region, the largest number of planned extensions is in South Korea, with a market value of about $3 billion. Japan had plans for plant life extensions as well but after the Fukushima disaster the extension plans are on hold. Pressing Demand for Power and Averting the Costs of New-builds are the Key Drivers for Plant Life Extension The growing global demand for power is one of the main contributing factors for the increasing importance of PLEX. It grew from 12,851 Terawatt-hours (TWh) in 2000 to 19,538 TWh in 2012, at a Compound Annual Growth Rate (CAGR) of 3.6%. Furthermore, it is forecast that the demand for power will continue to rise from 19,538 TWh in 2012 to 26,413 TWh in 2020 at a CAGR of 3.8%. The capital cost of building new nuclear plants is considerably higher than extending their operational life. The development of a Nuclear Power Plant (NPP) involves an array of risks for an investor, which is the chief factor discouraging investment in new-build projects. Various risks involved in funding and construction increase the unpredictability of investment returns. Risks such as construction delays leading to increased construction costs and threatening the ratings of investing institutions are the chief factors contributing to the lack of available financing for nuclear plants. However, the capital cost of Plant Life Management (PLIM) for long-term operation is lower compared to investment in replacement capacity. These factors have jointly contributed towards the increasing trend of plant operators aspiring to extend the operational lives of their NPPs. Most Operating Reactors Nearing the End of their Design Life In the global nuclear energy market, most operating reactors are nearing the end of their design life, making them eligible to pursue life extensions. Utilities operating such reactors are looking to extend their operating lives to cash in on the benefits that PLEXs offer. About 72% of the reactors across the globe are more than 20 years old, with almost half in the age range of 31-40 years. In general it has been observed that most reactors have a design life of 30-40 years, which means that these reactors will either soon need to be shut down or have their lifetimes extended.
