American Workers' Attitudes toward the Workforce, Jobs and Economy Heat Up

Despite lingering economic challenges, American workers are increasingly showing greater confidence when it comes to the economy, their employers, and even their ability to find a new job, according to the Randstad Employee Confidence Index released today. In fact, outlook on macroeconomic conditions, which measures worker sentiment in the strength of the economy and availability of jobs, reached a post-recession high of 46.8 points, more than double what it was in April 2008 (20.9). The Employee Confidence Index also returned to pre-recession numbers at 57 points, a figure last seen in August 2007. The survey, which monitors U.S. workers' personal confidence and tracks perspectives around jobs and the economy each month, was conducted online by Harris Interactive among over 1,200 employed U.S. adults in April, 2013.

The Randstad Employee Confidence Index decreased 3.3 points in January to 52.1, indicating U.S. workers may be feeling uncertain about the job market and economy amid ongoing budget negotiations, which have led to higher payroll taxes for many Americans. The Index, which tracks U.S. workers' perspectives around jobs and the economy each month, reveals only 26 percent of employees surveyed believe the economy is getting stronger, down five percentage points from the previous month's reading.
Randstad Survey: U.S. Worker Confidence Index Paints Rosy Picture Heading Into 2013

The Randstad Employee Confidence Index increased 3.7 points in December to 55.4, ending the year with one of the highest levels of optimism recorded over the last 12 months. The last time the Index scored 55 or above was in March 2012 when it reached 55.5. Randstad's Index, which measures employee insights on jobs, the economy, and their personal employment situation, found more workers believe the economy is not only getting stronger, but there are also more jobs available. This month, a greater number of employed adults also indicated they could land a new job in the next 12 months.
