Analyst Gerrick Johnson, who covers toys and physical games at BMO Capital Markets Equity Research Group, recently told the Wall Street Transcript that tablets and smartphone applications have impacted the physical games market, even more so than video games, such as Xbox or PlayStation consoles. In fact, Sony (NYSE: SNE) has come out both guns blazing with sales of its new PlayStation 4 system, reporting that more than one million units were sold in North America in the first 24 hours following the launch on November 15. Sony is forecasting that it will sell 5 million consoles by the end of the first quarter of 2014, outpacing the launch of its third iteration of the popular system in 2006, when 3.55 million units were sold during the same period after launch. Sony is also hoping that by keeping a lower price tag ($399) for its new console that it will generate more sales than rival Xbox One, which Microsoft (NASDAQ: MSFT) is introducing on November 22 for $499.

One World Doll Project to Capitalize Where Mattel and Hasbro Dare Not Go
ACCESSWIRE - Tue Oct 15, 9:00AM CDT
The holiday shopping season is just around the corner, which should have investors analyzing toy companies again, looking for plays that should reap rewards in the fourth quarter and going forward. While there are many toy and doll manufacturers globally, there are very few that command a sizeable market share in an industry that Euromonitor International valued at $85.8 billion in 2012. To put a finer point to the market available, two of the largest players, Hasbro (NASDAQ: HAS) and Mattel (NASDAQ: MAT) combined for 2012 revenue of $10.51 billion, representing only about 12 percent of the market. JAKKS Pacific (NASDAQ: JAKK) has been losing ground compared to its bigger rivals, with revenue sinking to $666.76 million in 2012, down for the fifth straight year.

Leaving Malibu, Unique Business Model Sets One World Apart from Mattel
ACCESSWIRE - Thu Sep 19, 9:00AM CDT
The toy business is big business, but also a very competitive one. A company must be able to set itself apart in order to drive higher margins to deliver the type of returns that shareholders want. Big box retailers have felt the pressure, with some analysts saying that diving profits at Toys 'R' Us were the reason that owners Bain Capital, KKR & Co. (NYSE: KKR) and Vornado Realty Trust (NYSE: VNO) yanked the initial public offering earlier this year. Toy manufacturer Mattel, Inc. (NASDAQ: MAT) has cannibalized sales of its iconic Barbie doll, with profits from the fashion doll falling 12 percent in the second quarter, marking the fourth consecutive quarterly decline. Taking away part of the profits from Barbie are newer lines like Monster High or the more expensive American Girls brand. Barbie is not going anywhere, but it looks like consumers want something different.
