They would have to be living on the planet Pluto not to realize how miniscule is their credibility in the eyes of the market and how lowly is the respect afforded them by the same market. No one on earth in their right mind would trust them. That's not a badge of pride unless one enjoys reaping a very bitter harvest down the road.
However, they have the opportunity of leaving a legacy of a great company that does much good for humanity and, at the same time, rewards its shareholders with fabulous returns if they recuse themselves, if nothing else for their own sakes and pocketbooks, by seeing to it that competent and honorable managers and respected board members take the reins of the new entity.
With a stock holding in the planned merger entity (SKTO + AEGY), they can watch their fortunes grow exponentially faster and farther than if they were in the entity itself spoiling the broth as they are wont to do.
