"Daniel, indeed, it is a broad question, and one that I think illustrates the enormity and ambiguity of the problem we are facing. The real issue, in my opinion, is that the industry is highly fragmented, which comes from being relatively young, and that nobody, up until now, has focused on it as an integration opportunity. There are several organizations that bring sophisticated processes and technologies to the table, but they lack efficiencies within the flow of materials, making it quite difficult to turn a profit.
Through acquisitions, teaming agreements, and licensing deals of our own, however, we have seen for a fact that operations in this industry can experience positive economic results.
Dan, I would love for you to post the links to the information you provided. There is a lot of conflicting information out there, and I think it would help others to see what progress we are making within the industry. It would also be helpful to understand specifically what they refer to.
The situation in China, for example, is much more complex than in the rest of the world, because they are not only introducing more electronics into their marketplace than any other country on the planet, they are also importing (mostly illegally) a large portion of the world’s discarded e-waste. This is one of the many reasons why many don’t agree on the data available, and why the spreads are so large. The informal sectors don’t typically provide accurate information if any at all, but that does not mean I disagree with your information, because there is a sincere interest in resolving these problems. I have personally seen a tremendous amount of support from the Chinese government for our involvement, and have met with several public figures, including very recent conversations with Consulate General of Wuhan (Mr. Vlad Lipshultz) on the subject. I am in Hong Kong at the moment, spreading awareness, and expanding our brand as we speak."
