It's a self-fulfilling routine. For anything less than huge volume, manipulators (bashers, shorts {naked or legit}) knock down gains. After numerous knockdowns, investors become conditioned to take immediate gains and a short-term zeitgeist overtakes most of the trading. In time, a conditioned market is doing the work of the manipulators.
