Witch hunts are a specific type of gang situtuation.  It's the pent up need to be part of a community cause.  A desire to be part of the "gang".  An excellent example is the McMartin preschool case.  The "gang" came together for a common cause.  The gang has since disbanded.

Another example is with dogs.  A dog sees another dog and goes nuts wanting to hook up.  Canine, wolfpack mentality.  Humans have wolfpack mentality also.
