But there is a lot of interest in the proposed technology. And it if it works as imagined, there should be lots of macroscopic plastic to collect and process. They are looking for a way to process it.
It will need to be sorted before it is processed. I have mentioned a number of plastic sorting technologies and believe that JBI should be talking with these companies since it is clear that the processors need sorted plastic to make the process most efficient. It is much easier to control a process with a known input than an unknown input.
So a combination of this collection technology along with some sorting technology and the P2O technology would at least begin to address the macro problem in the plastic gyres. It would go a long way towards helping to avoid more of the microscopic problem that exists when the plastic breaks down.
I just drove past JBI on the Robert Moses Parkway this past week.
I had no interest in stopping to see them. They are not going to tell me anything important related to the success of the company (if they even allowed me through the gate). And I don't need any more bottles of gasoline to stick in my lawnmower.
There is nothing I would expect to see from the road that would be worth reporting. Even if there was a truck there I wouldn't know what kind of schedule it was on. But I guess it would have been comforting to see. I had more important things to do, though.
Either the technology works well enough to create a successful business model or it does not. I think they are currently borderline successful and it is a big question mark whether or not they can get to the point of being CFP before going under.
I think I'll draft a letter to the Monroe County recycling facility to see if they are still sending plastic to JBI. Haven't heard much about that effort recently.
What do you think the chances are that this is still happening?
