- Mr. Market may be worried about stock valuations, the Federal Reserve, instability in emerging markets, and so forth. Nick Taborek and Callie Bost of Bloomberg News have the story on VelocityShares Daily Inverse VIX Short-Term ETN (XIV), which has slumped nearly 25% in the new year, including 4% on Wednesday. This one and the similarly constructed ProShares Short VIX Short-Term Futures ETF (SVXY) tend to rise when bullish sentiment predominates, as they did during 2013. From Bloomberg: About $196 million was added last week to the VelocityShares Daily Inverse VIX Short-Term ETN, which rises in value as swings decline, the most since its debut in November 2010, according to data compiled by Bloomberg. ... Investors have also withdrawn money from a VIX fund that rises with higher volatility.

- PowerShares S&P 500 Low Volatility Portfolio (SPLV) is taking the edge off recent selloffs, like its name suggests. This ETF, which screens for the least volatile S&P 500 stocks, entered Monday's session down 2.5% YTD, versus the S&P 500's 3.5%. Their method is to switch between the S&P 500, cash and volatility futures according to a complex formula designed to dodge selloffs. These are PowerShares S&P 500 Downside Hedged Portfolio (PHDG) and Barclays S&P 500 Dynamic Vector ETN (VQT). The PowerShares ETF is just about unchanged today on a net-asset value basis.
