A colonoscopy is an exam used to detect changes or abnormalities in the large intestine (colon) and rectum.

During a colonoscopy, a long, flexible tube (colonoscope) is inserted into the rectum. A tiny video camera at the tip of the tube allows the doctor to view the inside of the entire colon.

GIVN reported that the FDA has cleared PillCam COLON as a new modality to provide visualization of the colon. It may be used for detection of colon polyps, which is the first step in preventing colorectal cancer, in patients after an incomplete optical colonoscopy with adequate preparation and a complete evaluation of the colon was not technically possible.
