"I had read about “Charlotte’s Web,” a strain of medical cannabis developed for a young child who had as many as 200 seizures a day, for which modern medicine had no answers for this little girl and her parents. Desperate, they tried medical cannabis and she had only one seizure in the last year, according to what I read. What I saw and heard amazed me, and opened up what I think is an opportunity to bring personal health records (“PHR”) into a new and growing area of business.
An article in Politico published on January 26th, 2014 projects the Medical Marijuana business to be a 10.2 billion dollar market by 2018 with 64% growth rates expected just this calendar year. According to the article this growth rate is higher than the global smart phone market.
What I learned during my visit is that perception of the business is not reality. Reality is that medical marijuana is proving to be a “Medicine” that appears to benefit patients in a variety of ways. From reversing disease and related symptoms to pain management to helping with sleep disorders and sleep apnea.
The people in charge of the facility I visited, told me of many cases where people are in dire pain, in wheelchairs, literally looking for anyway to find relief. Many have no money or insurance to pay for care. And if they did, medical marijuana would not have been covered. As a result, I learned that many facilities have a policy of dispensing medical cannabis free to patients who need it and cannot afford it. To me this is the ultimate example of giving back through cause related marketing.
I have always been a believer in and I am a veteran of many successful cause-related marketing programs because they work. They also benefit many who can’t afford to pay for medical care, food or shelter, and in this case, prescription medications or the benefits of medical marijuana to accomplish the same or similar objectives.
Therefore, starting immediately, MMR will make Personal Health Records available for sale in cooperatives.
