08:53 AM EST, 01/21/2014 (MT Newswires) -- Platinum is the metals star this morning with futures sharply higher on a looming supply threat. Platinum prices rose to their highest level in over two months after Members of South Africa's Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union (AMCU), the main trade union for South African platinum miners, reportedly said over the weekend that they would go on strike.
The strike would impact operations at Anglo American (the world's largest platinum producer), Lonmin PLC and Impala Platinum Holdings Ltd.
Platinum futures were last up 1.1% at $1,446.80 per ounce.
