Legal Girl: The simple point here is that the letter attributed to Gomez doesn't lose any points, as feared, because the writer spelled the plant as "marihuana." It's not a misspelling. In fact, marihuana predates the word marijuana and is the original word, "marijuana" being a later Anglicized variant. "Marihuana" is used in new laws and statutes to preserve legal continuity with the primary spelling.
If Gomez is Spanish, then it makes the case even stronger that he is the letter writer.
