MediaTek Redefines Smart TV Experience with its 8-Series Platform
LAS VEGAS — MediaTek Incorporated today announced its fifth generation of Smart TV platforms. MediaTek’s 8-series chipset family consists of fully integrated SOCs (systems on chip) and specially designed for the next-generation UHD smart TVs.
The 8-series chipset family supports UHD resolution for HEVC codec at 60Hz implemented in hardware. The chipsets include a quad-core ARM processor in big.LITTLE configuration running up to 1.2 GHz, and powerful Mali T624 GPU clocked at 500 MHz. This 8-series family also includes MediaTek’s market-leading Picture Quality (PQ) engine, which is now in its ninth generation.
The TV landscape is fast-changing in the living room to include experiences beyond traditional broadcast TV consumption, such as Over-the-Top (OTT) content streaming, video conferencing, console-quality gaming and multi-screen sharing. The 8-series family supports all legacy and new content protection schemes to ensure premium content is securely delivered and consumed. The latest Android Kit Kat framework is supported along with an uber fast boot time of under four seconds. Intense use cases such as concurrent gaming and video conferencing or sharing content between mobile devices and Smart TV are supported.
“As leaders in the Smart TV segment, we are thrilled to offer the next flagship offering in our Smart TV SOC portfolio. With UHD and Android support as well as our 9th generation picture quality engine, this platform will revolutionize the living room experience for consumers around the world,” said Joe Chen, GM of MediaTek’s Home Entertainment Business Unit.
MediaTek’s 9th generation PQ engine has a mature implementation of several advanced features such as scaling, color engine, noise reduction, sharpness engine, local dimming and backlight control.
This platform supports global standards for TV broadcast, multiple analog and digital I/O interfaces, in-house wireless connectivity technologies including 802.11ac, Bluetooth and NFC to enable high speed streaming, innovative remote controllers and fast pairing.
The 8-series chipset platform is sampling mid 2014 and commercial Smart TV products are expected by late 2014.
