Introduction
COUNTRY’S MINING PRODUCTION GREW 12% IN 2012 COMPARED TO THE PREVIOUS YEAR.
The states with the highest participation were: Sonora, with 24.89% of the total value of mining production; Zacatecas with 21.85% share of the total value; Chihuahua came in third place with 12.22%; followed by Durango, with 6.94%; and San Luis Potosi ranked fifth with 5.18%. Together, these five states represented 71.1% of the total value of the national mining production.
Regarding to the mining and metallurgical production, increases were observed in the production of some grantable minerals such like: gold, silver, copper, iron ore, manganese, bentonite, kaolin, celestite, silica, feldspar, fluorite, phosphate, salt, silica, sulfate, vermiculite, wollastonite and plaster; mainly. In contrast, the production of antimony, sulfur, barite, bismuth, cadmium, carbon, dolomite, molybdenum, lead, zinc and magnesium sulfate decreased.
On the other hand, the non-grantable minerals that increased production were: stone aggregates, clay, sand, calcite, limestone, quarry, gravel and fuller, mainly; this year there were no reports of basalt, ignimbrite and slate.
Among the precious metals, the 2012 production value registered a growth of 16.10% above the previous year; gold’s volume production recorded an increase of 15.96% compared to 2011, setting Mexico as the seventh largest worldwide gold producer. Silver increased its produce volume by 12.15%, consolidating our country as the main silver producer. The biggest gold production was concentrated in Sonora, which contributed with the 29%, followed by Zacatecas with 21.1% and Chihuahua with 19.2%. Concerning the silver extraction and benefit, Zacatecas lead with the 43.6% of the total production, followed by Chihuahua and Durango with 19.2% and 12.1% respectively.
Copper production befell principally in Sonora, with a 77% of the national production; followed by Zacatecas with 10.2%; San Luis Potosí with 4.6% and Chihuahua with 3.2%; the remainder was produced in Durango, Guerrero, Mexico, Michoacán, Queretaro and Sinaloa, among others.
Production performance came as a result of large investment amounts inflow, which grew 36.3%, attaining a total amount of 7.647 billion dollars between 2007 and 2012. Investments encourage long-term projects, the generation of basic infrastructure such as roads, highways, drainage, public lighting; they also deliver social infrastructure like schools, sports centers, hospitals, good quality housing, among others.
Furthermore, mining-metallurgical exports reached 22.72 billion dollars during 2012 and combined with a 1.7% decrease at imports, which resulted in a surplus of the mining-metallurgical trade balance for 12.657 million dollars.
The mining sector growth brings great benefits to the national economy as well as for the population. It is worth mentioning that in 2012, the employment in the mining-metallurgical sector grew 6.1% above the previous year, accumulating three years of expansion. By the end of December of the reporting year, the number of mining-metallurgical employees totaled 328.555, an amount that represented the creation of 18.833 new jobs in relation with 2011.
