It seems the NFL's zero tolerance for cannabis is becoming a bone of contention among NLF players, many of whom live with pain and favor a relaxation of the league's inflexible ban built into player contracts. NFL Commissioner Roger Goodel is adamantly opposed to any change in policy even for medical therapeutic use. It's a money issue. League image could take a beating for unintentionally sending message to youth to toke up, not to mention ridicule by disapproving fans. So their thinking goes. The rumble is that when 25 of the states approve medical cannabis, the players may take the ban to court, the last thing Goodel wants. In Dec 2013, 20 states and DC (plus 4 states pending) have legalized mmj. An interesting battle may be shaping up.
The graceful way out is for Goodel to approve a non-psychoactive MG/BB product for the players in pain who reside in a legal state or otherwise legally qualify. NFL might take note that the World Anti-Doping Agency recently upped the Olympics' positive test threshold for cannabis from 15 nanograms/ml to 150 nanograms/ml. By the way, SK's Jeffrey Benz was General Counsel and head of business and government affairs for the United States Olympic Committee (USOC) and served as a private judge in disputes over athlete-doping issues in sports.
