No, Really: Ashton Kutcher Is Now a Product Engineer for a Chinese Tech Company
Congratulations to Ashton Kutcher, who has effectively one-upped other Hollywood-educated “creative directors”— euphemistic title for celebrity spokespeople —with his lofty new gig as “product engineer” for the Chinese PC manufacturer Lenovo Group. Officially, per the Hollywood Reporter , Kutcher will “work with Lenovo’s engineering teams worldwide and provide input and decision-making into design, specifications, software and usage scenarios.” Unofficially, Kutcher will be photographed with Lenovo products ( Exhibit A ) and endorse the brand through promotional interviews, many of which he has already given in celebration of his new position with the company.
Talking to Wired , Kutcher attempted to dispel any notion that he would be just another overcompensated pitchman. “I’m an actual product engineer,” he explained. “I know that’s hard for people to understand because so many of these [celebrity endorsements] have been vanity products. I actually am less interested in the color of the phone or tablet than in how it works.”
Kudos to ABC ’s Joanna Stern, who asked Ashton Kutcher point-blank about “celebrity executive roles” being “a bit of a joke in the tech industry.” Kutcher responded by citing his own tech and engineering résumé:
I can say one of the big differences is that I went to school for engineering—albeit I didn’t graduate, but I learned to program when I was 19 years old. I work on a daily basis with engineers that are building some of the finest software products in the world today. I bet if you asked a lot of these people what a MySQL database is they would probably run the other way and not even know what that is.
I’ve had the benefit to work with guys like Daniel Ek [C.E.O. of Spotify], Jack Dorsey, Shawn Parker, Shawn Fanning [founders of Napster]—some of the greatest product minds—and I hope some of their brilliance has rubbed off.
Kutcher, who starred as Apple mastermind Steve Jobs in the averagely reviewed Jobs biopic this summer, studied biochemical engineering at the University of Iowa. Adding to his tech credentials, he co-founded A-Grade Investments, which has provided venture capital and collaboration for various tech companies, including Airbnb, Fab, Foursquare, Spotify, Path, and Uber. And subtracting from that tech cred, he currently stars on Two and a Half Men .
