In May 2012 there were reports that the cable was operational, but with use restricted to Cuban and Venezuelan government entities. Internet access by the general
public still uses the slower and more expensive satellite links,[19] until January 2013 when internet speeds increased.[20]
China, Cuba's second largest trading partner and the largest importer of Cuban goods, has pledged to "provide assistance to Cuba to help its social and economic
development." Chinese networking equipment and expertise are world class and China has experience building domestic communication infrastructure in developing nations.[7]
In 2009 a U.S. company, TeleCuba Communications, Inc., was granted a license to install an undersea cable between Key West, Florida and Havana, although political
considerations on both sides have prevented the venture from moving forward.[7]
In June 2013 Cuba's state-run telecom company ETECSA announced that it plans to begin offering in-home Internet connections by late 2014.[24]

C&WC lays new submarine fiber optic cable
By Business News Americas staff reporter - Thursday, May 27, 2010
Cable & Wireless Communications (C&WC) is installing an additional submarine cable, dubbed the "east-west" cable, from Jamaica and the Cayman Islands to the British
Virgin Islands, with a link to the Dominican Republic, according to a company statement.
The company, under its Jamaican moniker LIME, has already started to install the cable, which will be operational in early 2011.
A total 23 Caribbean countries are linked by the company's cable system. With this addition, C&WC hopes to create a network ring in the region which will serve as a
main data route from Latin America to the US.
C&WC announced in March of this year a partnership with Telecomunicaciones Gran Caribe (TGC) - a joint venture between the Venezuelan and Cuban governments - to build
a further fiber optic cable between Jamaica and Cuba.
The two existing submarine cables owned by the company are the CBUS cable between Bermuda and the British Virgin Islands, and the Gemini-Bermuda cable between Bermuda
and the east coast of the US.
In September 2009, C&WC counted approximately 8.3mn mobile, 1.8mn fixed-line and 600,000 broadband customers.
The company is headquartered in London and operates in the Caribbean, Panama, Macau and Monaco. It demerged from parent company Cable & Wireless Group on March 26.

TELECOMMUNICATIONS: Fiber cables to span the Arctic Ocean
The demand for better connections between Tokyo and London is driving construction of the first submarine fiber-optic cables to span the Arctic Ocean. High-capacity cables are planned for two routes, one through the Northwest Passage in Canadian and Alaskan waters, the other through Russian waters on the other side of the Arctic. The cables will be among the world’s longest, and also will provide high-speed connections to communities and industries along the Arctic coast.
Arctic Fibre will have three fiber pairs providing express service between Tokyo and London. Each will carry 40 Gbit/s on up to 80 channels per fiber initially, with upgrades possible to 100 Gbit/s per channel. A separate fiber pair will carry local traffic to about a dozen points in the Arctic to keep freeze-thaw damage to a drop cable from affecting through traffic,

Pacnet to build 100Gbps optical mesh network
Announcement: Says data center customers will benefit with seamless network services between interconnected facilities
18 January 2013 by DatacenterDynamics FOCUS
Pacnet has announced plans to deploy an optical mesh network with 100Gbps technology and integrated Optical Transport Network (OTN) switching utilizing its wholly owned subsea cable network EAC-C2C, giving it the ability to meet explosive future capacity needs throughout Asia.
Tier 1 Internet provider Level 3 has added more data center space in London along its low latency fiber routes.
The colocation and managed hosting facility is designed for customers wanting to connect directly to the Chi-X trading platform in Slough.
The facility, which comes under the Level 3 Premier elite brand, features high density cabinets and will be connected to Level 3’s other data centers located around the world, of which there are 350 in 45 countries.
A new 40Gbps submarine cable offering ultra-low latency speeds will start operating between key points in Asia on 20 August, NTT Communications, the major investor in the Asia Submarine-cable Express cable, said.
The fiber optic cable, which will be launched with a capacity of more than 15Tbps has capacity to be upgraded to 100Gbps using optical technology.
ASE stretches 7,800km and connects landing points in Japan, the Philippines, Malaysia and Singapore.
