- Shares of Micron Technology (MU) are up 48 cents, or 2.3%, at $21.75, after Needham & Co.'s Rajvindra Gill today started coverage of the shares with a Buy rating and a $30 price target, writing that the shares have seen their valuation multiple contract, but it may expand going forward as the company rides the structural changes in DRAM and NAND chip manufacturing. "While it's difficult to utilize historical valuation multiples for MU given that earnings have been so volatile, we believe MU should fetch a 12x-14x P/E and 3-4x tangible book value." Although Micron shares are up 243% this year, the stock's forward P/E "has actually contracted 44% from ~16x in July to ~9x today," he points out: Clearly, sell-side estimates increased rapidly once the Elpida earnings became visible to investors (estimates moved from $1.01 to $2.16). But even after the estimates were modulated higher to account for Elpida, the P/E NTM multiple has stagnated in the 8-9x range. We think there are two reasons for the lack of significant multiple expansion: 1) while the consolidation in the DRAM and NAND industries is well known, many still do not seem to believe it will result in structural changes that will lead to higher profitability, and 2) several investors seem to believe we are approaching peak earnings for Micron that corresponds with a peak in the cycle, and therefore are not willing to pay a higher multiple.
