Nowadays, it’s a common practice to safeguard mobile devices as they could be prone to theft or hacking. As passwords are no longer sufficient to provide the security needed, the use of biometrics (such as face, voice, fingerprint, and retina) for authentication is being explored.
Although the built-in fingerprint reader by Apple (News - Alert) for the iPhone 5s proved not to be as secure as intended (i.e., not a safe method for fingerprint locking/unlocking), fingerprint identification may be an integral part of the multi-factor authentication approach to enhance security; other solutions include the use of bimodal (voice+face) solution, which is offered by SpeechPro, or voice biometrics for mobile platforms to verify, identify and authenticate users.
NXT-ID, Inc., a company specialized in biometrics and focused on the growing mobile commerce market, has already 22 patents in the field of 3D facial recognitions, and it concentrates on solutions for mitigating the risks involved with the use of mobile commerce, mobile computing and smart OS-enabled devices.
On Monday, Oct. 4, the company announced the release of its Voicematch algorithm, which was presented ahead of schedule. It was originally scheduled to launch in the third quarter of 2014; yet, it has been successfully developed much sooner than expected and is now ready for release.
Its Voicematch app technology, which is to be used for e-commerce, is designed to provide multi-factor recognitions for users. It is a modular voice recognition platform that can be applied to a variety of mobile devices (tablets, smartphones and laptops) but also desktop computers. It’s a voice recognition biometrics solution that can add security to all portable platforms, including Android (News - Alert) and iOS, by ensuring the identification of the user who is trying to gain access.
Voicematch is part of the MobileBio family of biometric solutions for consumers’ mobile devices and adds a variety of interesting features. For example, it has a biosensor that can communicate with the device that needs to be accessed directly or remotely. Being “Web-enabled,” Voicematch can provide verification not only locally (through the device itself), but also through the identity management and information biocloud assurance services which are cloud-based.
Authentication of users is also important for using other NXT-ID products like the recently-updated Wocket, the company’s ultra-low power electronic wallet that ensures secure electronic payments. Voicematch can be used in conjunction with Wocket to ensure multi-factor authentication.
As NXT-ID CEO Gino Pereira explained, the company is particularly proud to provide a speech and speaker recognition product as “speaking is a very natural way to be authenticated.” He believes that Voicematch is the next step after Apple’s fingerprint scanners technology that has brought validation through biometrics on mobile platforms.
NXT-ID CTO, David Tunnel, instead, highlights that the new product is not only extremely accurate, but is also very efficient in terms of power usage. This makes it perfect for use with mobile and wearable devices “where low-power is paramount” and for apps that handle sensitive or confidential information.
Soon, more details will be released on the technology behind the Voicematch algorithm as NXT-ID gets ready to apply for a patent.
