A pioneer in the world of cannabis technology, in 1972 D. Gold developed methods and techniques for the extraction and purification of medicinal cannabinoids that he detailed in the 100,000+ selling book Cannabis Alchemy. This was the first book on cannabis technology written from a consumer’s point of view. Gold went on to edit, design and publish the first edition of Ed Rosenthal’s Marijuana Growers Guide and worked with Tom Forcade in the founding of High Times magazine. In 1977, Gold produced the Isomerizer and Iso2 extraction machines, and went on to develop this technology into helping pioneer the alcohol fuel (gasohol) industry by building a 5000 gallon solar/vacuum ethanol distillation plant with a grant from the Calif. Dept. of Food and Agriculture, UC Davis, and the DOE. Gold penned the book Solargas in 1979, the first modern book on fuel ethanol.
In 1994 Gold founded Creston Brewing Company, brewing Olde 420 Deadhead Draft, and Hempinstead Ale, the nation’s first commercially-sold hemp beer. In 1996 Gold founded San Francisco’s first new, legal medical cannabis dispensary, Dharma Producers Group in San Francisco, after the passage of Prop 215, under the watchful eye of SF District Attorney Terence Hallinan. After several incarnations, Dharma has since developed into the non-profit collective Dharma Care and Hospice Program, which provides free high-quality cannabis medicine to those Californians who are terminally ill and cannot afford the cannabis medicine prescribed by their doctor. Recently Gold co-authored the soon-to-be-published book Cannabis Chemotherapy, a compendium of scientific literature demonstrating the efficacy of concentrated cannabis medicine in treating cancer. Gold also taught the Sunday Afternoon Grow Class at Harborside Health Center from 2007- 2010.
In 2011-2012, Gold co-founded BerkeleyBio-Organic Research Laboratories with his partner, Charles Apel, Ph. D.
