Unless you live under a rock in the middle of nowhere, you probably know who Stan Lee is. If you don’t know him by name, you will definitely know one of the many superheroes he’s created: Spiderman, Hulk, Thor and so many others.
Well, he’s back. Back in March 2013, The Hub announced that Lee’s miniseries, Stan Lee’s Mighty 7, was to become an animated pilot movie, with the hope to be aired in early 2014. It focuses around himself training seven aliens, into superheroes he can use as inspiration for a new comic.
An incredible all-star cast has been announced: The ‘Mighty 7’ aliens are Strong Arm, the superhero with super strength, voiced by Armie Hammer ; Lazer Lord, the laser ball flinging superhero, voiced by Christian Slater ; Mayim Bialik playing the super-fast Lady Lightning; the flying Silver Skylark, voiced by Teri Hatcher ; Flea as the self-explanatory Roller Man, who launches at high speeds, rolled as a ball; Darren Criss playing Micro, the superhero that can make himself tiny at will and Sean Astin playing Kid Kinergy who’s superpower is telekinesis.
And if that wasn’t enough, additional voices include Jim Belushi , who will be voicing the leader of a covert operations military division, Mr. Cross, who’s assigned to investigate UFO sightings. As well as Belushi, Michael Ironside will be voicing the Xanar, leader of Taegon, the warring aliens who enslave other planets and raid their natural resources.
The whole animated movie trilogy will be based around Lee, who has been approached by Archie Comics to create the next group of superheroes. It isn’t that easy however, so Lee takes a trip to the desert as a hope to clear the writer’s block and even find some information. This is when he discovers the ‘Mighty 7’ and unknowingly gets himself caught up in a military chase. He makes the spontaneous decision to have these aliens enter his Malibu home in order to effectively train them into the superhero potential he can see.
“ Mighty 7 is the first reality style comic books series and the first superhero project from Stan Lee Comics. We’re combining fantasy and reality, comedy and adventure for a superhero series unlike anything I’ve created before,” said Lee in his introduction of the cast. “These incredible actors have brought these alien superheroes to life even better than I could have imagined…if that’s even possible!”
As any Darren Criss fan knows, he is tiny, thus making his casting choices one of my favourites. Moreover , add Sean Astin to the mix, who any StarKid would know as Dylan Saunders, on top of the rest of the already great cast, we are going to have a new favourite group of heroes.
If we weren’t excited enough about Stan Lee’s next creation, this casting ensures we all wait for 2014, bouncing impatiently in our seats. In the meantime, you can watch the trailer for Stan Lee’s Mighty 7 on the official website
