Sanoma to rationalise Dutch magazine portfolio as part of consumer media redesign

Sanoma Corporation, Stock Exchange Release, 31 October 2013 at 8:45 CET+1

As part of a redesign of its consumer media operations, Sanoma has decided to implement a significant restructuring in the Netherlands. This restructuring is expected to affect approximately 500 FTEs and will be focused on its magazine business and the corresponding support staff.

Out of its current Dutch magazine portfolio Sanoma will focus on 17 strong brands and their extensions and specials. These 17* print brands all share the capability to transcend into digital media formats. The brands are part of five specific content domains: Women, Parenting, Kids & Teens, Home Deco and Automotive. Focusing on strong brands allows new benefits for our customers.

Sanoma’s remaining 32 magazine titles in the Netherlands are part of a portfolio rationalisation. This means that Sanoma will investigate whether titles can be merged with other Sanoma magazine titles or be sold. The expectation is that this rationalisation will be finished within 6 to 12 months. Magazines that have not been sold and are no longer profitable are planned to be closed down. No titles will be closed in 2014.

Sanoma’s ten custom media titles that are produced for sports associations will be transferred to Sanoma subsidiary HeadOffice and are not part of the portfolio rationalisation.

Sanoma Media Netherlands is taking these significant measures now to remain a healthy and leading media company in the future as well.

It is Sanoma's intent to implement all measures by the end of 2015.

*The 17 magazine titles (and their related brand extensions) that remain in focus are the following:

Women: Libelle, Margriet, Flair, Viva, LINDA., Flow, and Story. Kids & Teens: Donald, Tina, Zo Zit Dat, and Fashionista. Parenting: Ouders van Nu, and Kèk Mama. Home Deco: vt Wonen, Ariadne at Home, and Eigen Huis & Interieur. Automotive: AutoWeek.
