Why isn't VU in the channel line up on the side? I

Why isn't VU in the channel line up on the side? If it's there, I didn't see it. And how do you know you are on the VU channel? Is it just a series of shorts? I only saw commercials at the very beginning of the channels I clicked on. Maybe I'm just old....I don't get it!
