Mexico's iron ore production has remained flat over the past few years, produced 6,797,555 t of iron ore in 2002 a 18.2% increase from 2002 (5,750,563 t) mainly from the country's primary producer, Mineral del Norte (Minosa). Most of Mexico’s iron ore reserves are located at Pena Colorada (131Mt) and Hercules (168 Mt). Steel producer, GAN, of which Minosa is a subsidiary, intends developing the 300 Mt Santa Maria Zaniza project in Oaxaca. Mine production of iron ore has been declining over the past few years.
